The Leagues Cup action continues at Providence Park on Friday night as high-flying Liga MX side Monterrey take on the Portland Timbers in the Round of 32.
Monterrey finished the 2022/23 Liga MX season with more points than any other side, but they were eliminated at the semi-final stage of the playoffs. Los Rayados have started the new season on an impressive run with seven points from three Liga MX matches and a 100% record in the Leagues Cup.
That is a stark contrast to Portland Timbers, who last year failed to make the playoffs for the first time in the team’s history. Those struggles have continued into 2023 with Giovanni Savarese’s side down in 12th in the Western Conference. The Timbers have looked to bolster their squad with the recent signing of Brazilian winger Antony from top flight Portuguese side FC Arouca. However it is not yet clear if Antony will be able to play against Monterrey.
