Churchill Downs Incorporated has acquired land in Eastern Daviess County, outside the city limits of Owensboro.
It has plans to construct the previously mentioned historical racing machine (HRM) entertainment complex as an addition to Ellis Park Racing & Gaming here. The finance for Ellis Park race meetings will be supported by this new facility.
In the upcoming months, the company will release updated information on the property’s location, development and investment plans and other factors.
Churchill Down Incorporated (CDI) signed an agreement in September 2022 to buy Ellis Park Racing and Gaming in Henderson, Kentucky for a total consideration of $79m in cash.
Ellis Park, which is north of the Ohio River, has hosted horse races for 100 years and is known as the origin of Kentucky’s Summer Thoroughbred racing. Around 300 HRM are located in the park’s gaming facility.
Andy Beshear, Kentucky Governor, said: “Churchill Downs has proven it has the experience, resources and desire to reinvigorate Ellis Park into a premier racing destination and provide unmatched gaming entertainment.”
Churchill Downs recently made the decision to temporarily stop running races at its racecourse, effective from 7 June 2023 to 3 July 2023.
This comes after 12 horses lost their lives as a result of an extremely high number of horse injuries at Churchill Downs Racecourse in the previous month.
Furthermore, Churchill Downs and TwinSpires, the Kentucky Derby’s official betting partner, revealed wagering data for the Day program in May.
