Michael Wells, the Oregon Lottery’s Interim Director, has been named the agency’s permanent director. Governor Tina Kotek made this announcement, with the confirmation pending from the Oregon Senate in September.

The director oversees the organisation’s administration and management, and serves as the Oregon Lottery Commission’s Secretary and Executive Officer.

Governor Kotek said: “The Oregon Lottery funds critical state services like education, state parks and veteran services.

“It is imperative that the director is an experienced leader who will champion transparency and accountability. During his time at the Oregon Lottery, Michael has worked closely with staff, the Commission, and stakeholders to lead with the highest standards of security and integrity.”

Michael Wells has served as the Oregon Lottery’s interim director since December 2022.

Prior to this, he worked as a manager of cybercrime and Assistant Director for Security and compliance at the Oregon Lottery.

Wells spent more than 24 years serving in local, state and federal law enforcement before joining the Oregon Lottery.

Most recently, he worked for more than 10 years as a special agent in the Oregon Department of Justice’s organised crime division. He also participated in the FBI’s Cyber Crime Task Force, which conducted investigations into computer intrusions.

In addition, Wells has worked as a police officer for several organisations, including the Oregon State Police.

He additionally serves on the board of the Oregon Peace Officer Association and has been a member of Cyber Oregon, Oregon’s Cybersecurity Advisory Council.

Wells said: “I appreciate Governor Kotek’s trust in my leadership and look forward to leading the work of the Oregon Lottery in funding critical programs that serve Oregonians.”
